"BENEDIXIT" ≠ "SAID THE BLESSING"

It boggles me, how this got past. It's Incomprehensible. Unconscionable. Appalling.

I don't know that offering argument is even helpful, but sometimes I can't help myself.

The heart of the Canon Missae TWICE contains a lovely string of simple plast tense verbs: "accepit... benedixit, [fregit,] dedit..." in which string it is abundantly clear that their unrepeated direct object is One. In the currently approved translation, we have, instead of "benedixit", the odd interruption "said the blessing". Not only is the wondrously simple gramar broken by this interruption, but it introduces ambiguities:

• "WHAT Blessing?"
• "Blessing WHAT?"
• "Are WE (in eis memoriam...) supposed to 'Say' that same blessing?"
• "Then why don't we have that written out for us?"

All of these are easily resolved by the perfectly clear and obviously good alternative translation "took ... ✠ blessed, broke, and gave...", especially noting that immemorial custom and the Traditional Rite Command that the Priest, in saying "benedixit", once more actually does sign a cross over the object of blessing.

There's another IUA in the current translation of the section "Supplices te rogamur...", but we'll save that for later.
