Today’s new arXivals in math.AT suggest to me that it’s very possible someone else will finish or obsolete my primary project before I do.
At least, the kind of results they are claiming are very${}^2$ similar to the kind of results I’m looking for, if not the particular conjectures I was trying to decide along the way.
What to do, what to do…

I'm sorry! Is yours coming from the same approach?
My advisor just advised me that my topic will not work very well, and that I should do a totally different sort of doctorate than I had thought to write. Instead of doing the normal textual analysis that one does in philosophy, I should use my newly acquired skills to locate, transcribe, edit some Medieval text and then offer a translation and commentary of the same.
I'm not sure what their methods are yet, but both the particular invariant-of-spaces and particular spaces they're discussing seem to be in the right neighborhood; I'm studying a different invariant of a different space to get where I'm sure they'd be very happy to be, but also they've got results they can publish.
Yours seems still to be original, then, even if to demonstrate a different method of arriving at the same results, thus confirming theirs.
Seeming, maybe; it's always hard to be quite sure; but I think I've decided I'll have to finish my current whatever in any case, because otherwise I'll never know how it goes!
